The Learning Academy

What are Learning Academies?

§         Learning Academies are after-school programs located in the community they serve. They are staffed by qualified teachers and paraprofessionals and supported by both paid and unpaid community mentors.

How are the Learning Academies designed?

§         The Learning Academy design will vary in each market. Typically each will support 75-120 students each term with individualized lesson plans based on learning objectives.

§         Each student receives individualized instruction, small group instruction, homework help and snack. Some Administrators are including enrichment activities for children.

  • Each student is assessed and results are linked to instruction. Prescriptions and lesson plans include materials available to only the Learning Academy and its site.

Why is there such an emphasis on personalized instruction and mentoring?

  • Studies confirm that underachieving students need individualized instruction, positive adult role models, structure and attention to restore their self-confidence and joy for learning. The Academy also provides a solution to the supervision gap that exists for children of working parents when childcare is unavailable or unaffordable. The Academy becomes a safe and healthy place for children.

How are Learning Academies equipped?

  • All Learning Academies will implement HOSTS Learning Systems. This allows the Learning Academies to provide structured mentoring intervention programs in English and Spanish Language Arts and English Language Development that reinforce classroom teaching and improve student outcomes aligned with state and local standards.
  • Learning Academies will also be equipped with supplemental materials from over 40 publishers linked to the instructional prescriptions.
